History:

After a six year run, it was time to change up Caballero’s deck graphic. Just in time for the filming of the Animal Chin video in 1986, a new dragon graphic was created for Cab. Now known as the Cab Chinese Dragon, the artwork was inspired by a Chinese takeout box and finally illustrated by VCJ. Furthermore, the Chinese Dragon came on a new “fish” shape in full size and mini size.

Where the Idea Came From:

In the mid 1960s, George Powell was just another teen in Southern California building skateboards out of two-by-fours in his parents’ garage. He’d ride those things “until they died,” he jokes, and continued skating through college, saving up Blue Chip stamps (a customer loyalty program started in the 1960s) to exchange for new boards when he shattered the others.

Powell Peralta has re-issued decks under the brand, Powell Classic. George Powell and Stacy Peralta have teamed up once again to re-issue some of the original pro models under Powell-Peralta. Current reissues include models from Steve Caballero, Ray “Bones” Rodriguez, Mike McGill, Steve Steadham, and Mike Vallely. In late 2010 Powell Skateboards and Powell Classic were folded into Powell-Peralta. The current team is Pros, which includes Steve Caballero.

Peralta credits this success with the company’s core values: “being as authentic as we could be to the skateboarding experience, not telling kids what to want, but getting what they wanted and translating that back to them.” He loved going to skate parks and talking with kids, while Powell made limited edition products just for the fun of it.
